Module summary

This module explores the theory and practice of clinical exercise prescription. It introduces the necessary tools (epidemiology, measures, prescription) for effective intervention. One key aspect is to introduce a series of exemplar clinical conditions and outline how the pathophysiology dictates appropriateness of different exercise interventions. Students have the opportunity to perform clinical exercise measures during a supervised practical, and then design their own exercise prescription report based on an example clinical patient. The blended learning approach will adopt a mix of tutorials, lectures, practical sessions and case studies. Recommended eLearning resources will be identified (including recorded lectures). Delivery will involve introductory tutorials followed by lectures of exemplar topics, online material, and application seminar.

Objectives

On successful completion of this module students will be able to:

-describe the general principles of exercise testing and prescription;

-interpret the results of clinical exercise testing;

-critically evaluate the underlying pathophysiology of clinical conditions;

-modify exercise prescription for complex clinical conditions (e.g. heart failure, cancer, obesity, the elderly).

4. Explain the pathophysiology underlying specific clinical conditions;

5. Identify and illustrate how to differentiate prescriptions for specific clinical conditions;

Syllabus

The module will cover the following:

- Pre-exercise evaluations

- Clinical exercise testing

- Principles of exercise prescription

- Pathophysiology of clinical conditions

- Exercise prescription modifications for clinical populations

3. Obesity and exercise training;

4. Lung disease pathophysiology ;

5. Lung disease and exercise rehabilitation;

6. Cardiac failure and pathophysiology ;

7. Cardiac failure and exercise rehabilitation;

8. Cancer pathophysiology

9. Cancer and exercise rehabilitation

8. Sarcopenia and pathophysiology

9. Sarcopenia and exercise training

10. Personalised Medicine for prescription


Tutorial components will include:

1. Group discussion for each clinical condition including example case study

2. Real world insights working in a clinic

1. Designing an exercise prescription (practical/seminar);

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

A member of the academic or clinical teaching staff will be allocated as tutor to the group and will meet with students during the module to assess progress, discuss issues arising, and set objectives for the next study period

Students will have the opportunity to self-assess progress by means of seminars, suggested reading material and on-line resources available.

Students will have tutorials to receive feedback following assessed work.
